How to Stop Someone From Adding You to WhatsApp Groups

On WhatsApp, by default, everyone can add you to a group if your contact is saved in their phone’s contact list.

If people keep adding you to the WhatsApp group but you don’t want to be part of a group and want nobody can add me to the WhatsApp group then this guide is for you.

This guide explains how to stop someone from adding me to a WhatsApp group on an Android phone, iPhone, Desktop, or Web.

How to Stop Someone From Adding You to WhatsApp Groups on Android

To stop someone from adding you to a WhatsApp group on an Android phone, follow the steps below:

Open the WhatsApp app on your Android phone.

Tap the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner.

Tap on “Settings” from the drop-down menu.

Tap on the “Account” or key icon.

Tap on the “Privacy” or lock icon.

Scroll down a bit and tap the “Groups” option at the bottom of the Disappearing messages section.

Now you can see three options:

  • Everyone: Anyone can add you to the group.
  • My contacts: Only your contacts can add you to the group.
  • My contacts expect: You can choose this option to stop someone from adding you to the group.

Choose “My contact expect” and add the contacts. The added contacts won’t be able to add you to the WhatsApp group.

How to Prevent Someone From Adding You to WhatsApp Groups on Desktop or Web

Follow the steps below to prevent someone from adding you to a WhatsApp group:

Open the WhatsApp app on your computer or go to the WhatsApp web app.

Click the three horizontal dots in the upper-right corner of the left sidebar.

Click “Settings” in the drop-down menu that appears.

Click on “Privacy.”

Scroll to the end of the left sidebar and tap “Groups.”

Select “My contacts except” and add the contacts. The added contacts won’t be able to add you to the WhatsApp group.

So in this way, you can stop people from adding you to a WhatsApp group on different devices.

Note: Once you’ve added a contact to the “My contacts except” options, contacts or people can’t add you to any groups. But they can invite you privately to join the group. Once they invite you, you receive an invite message to join the group. And if you want to join the group, then you tap on the join button in that invitation message.
